Assumes the same price and direct cost for each job. Covering bills is not a profit goal. How it works.
The method / Questions answered
One job at a time.
Assumes the same price and direct cost for each job. Covering bills is not a profit goal.
How many jobs do I need to break even?
First subtract direct job cost from job price. This is the amount each job contributes to regular bills. Divide monthly bills by that amount and round up to a whole job.
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s break-even guidance explains fixed costs divided by selling price minus variable cost. This tool applies that relationship to whole jobs.
What does an example look like?
Fictional example: $3,000 in monthly bills, a $500 job price and $200 direct cost leave $300 per job. You need 10 jobs and $5,000 in revenue to cover those bills.
What if a job costs as much as its price?
With monthly bills to cover, there is no number of jobs that covers them when each job leaves zero or less. If monthly bills are zero, zero jobs cover those bills; jobs priced at or below cost still do not create profit.
What if my jobs have different prices?
Use a typical job with matching direct costs, then try other combinations. This is a simplified monthly plan, not a cash-flow forecast. It does not allow for late payments or changing job mix.
