How this works

Quoted and actual costs each add labour, materials and other direct costs. Overrun is actual minus quoted costs. Direct contribution is revenue minus actual costs. Contribution margin divides this by revenue; it is undefined for zero revenue. Enter every cost, including an explicit zero. Unentered overhead and tax are not included. This is not net profit.

A worked example

Revenue of $2,000, quoted costs of $800 and actual costs of $1,050 give a $250 overrun and $950 direct contribution: 47.5% of revenue.

Can I compare tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive jobs?

Use one consistent basis for every amount in a review. State that basis above the ledger.
